While linguists everywhere believe that every Indo-European language (including English) traces its roots back to Sanskrit, the road from Sanskrit to English is so long that only a trained eye can trace it. Hindi, as the modern Sanskrit, however, is considerably closer to its roots.

Modern-day Hindi is splattered with English words - which means that in the case of an English speaker with no Hindi knowledge, hearing Hindi would probably still understand the occasional English sentence. However, leaving that aside, the two languages are as separate as can be, starting with the alphabet and ending with the structure.

Here are some of the more predominant differences:

- While the English language can be split into many subcategories - American, accepted British, Australian, etc. - commonly two speakers of two separate subcategories can understand each other. In the case of Hindi, it can be split into over twenty categories of which two representatives can barely understand each other. For the case of this article, we shall discuss accepted Hindi - the lawful Indian language.

- While the English language is created after a mingling of separate languages (Celtic, Latin, Saxon, Danish, French) corresponding with the numerous invasions of the British Isles, Hindi is a compound of five influences, many derived from Sanskrit but picked up in varied stages of its development:

Tatsam - original Sanskrit words.

Ardhatatsam - Sanskrit words borrowed in the middle to late Indo-Aryan periods.

Tadbhav - original Sanskrit words that suffered modifications in spelling.

Deshaj - Words that were not borrowed from any other language.

Videshi - Words that were borrowed from languages other than Sanskrit (mostly English).

- In terms of structure, a major dissimilarity is the fact that in Hindi the verb is commonly settled at the end of the sentence (ex: "I home will go"). Similarly, Hindi does not have prepositions, but postpositions (ex: kind of like saying "you with" instead of "with you")

Hindi verbs have forms that vary based on the field gender, field number (singular, plural), sentence tense and have three degrees of respect: intimate, normal/ familiar, respectful (varying on the person you speak to).

Why learn Hindi?

Hindi is the second most spoken language in the world - which is mostly due to the large number of Hindi native-speakers in India. It has many shapes and it is surely a challenge, but for a person interested in a completely separate culture and way of thinking, it is a very rewarding feat. It will provide way to some of the most antique texts that mankind has written (as a Sanskrit variation, it will open the door to studying Sanskrit texts). While very separate from English - once the basic rules are studied, it is logical and easy to learn.

- India is a source of many of the services that nowadays reach our doorstep and many international clubs have opened Indian subsidiaries. Knowledge of Hindi will most surely lead to great vocation opportunities.

I don't know if any of you are as old as me (or Feel as old) but about Four decades ago, Joe Garagiola (I guess if remember him you're as old!) wrote a book titled, "Baseball is a Funny Game." Well, the Nba can be pretty 'funny' too. Reconsider this. The Nuggets entered last night's home game with the Clippers on a seven-game winning streak and had gone 11-2 in January. Marcus Camby, the league's top rebounder had missed the team's last 15 games (Nuggets were 11-4 without him) but was set to return for last night's game.

So what happens? The Nuggets get Outrebounded 45-32 and lose, 105-87! Kobe should have been well-rested after his 81-point game on Sunday, as the Lakers had a four-day layoff before last night's game with Golden State. However, the man who "never saw a shot he didn't like or think he couldn't make", took just 12 shots straight through the game's first three quarters last night! He made just Two and entered the final quarter with a total of just Five points! Luckily for the Lakers (but Not for La bettors), someone must have reminded Kobe who he was, as he scored 25 points in the 4th quarter and overtime, as the Lakers escaped with a non-covering 106-105 win.
